SolarWolf : Marcel's Linux Game of the Month

Wed, 2006-06-21 18:29

Harken back with me, faithful reader, to the days of yore. Yea and verily, I speak of the days of video arcades, when a quarter of a dollar would buy you frantic minutes whereupon you, as humanity's only hope, were called upon to protect the earth from invading, marauding, aliens. Why were the aliens attacking? If one who could enter the alien psyche then perhaps we might catch a glimmer. Alas, time, and survival, are of the essence. And if you manage to avoid the aliens and their erratic firing patterns, there are also asteroids and other assorted space hazards to contend with. Keep moving, keep firing, and Godspeed, mighty warrior of Earth!

Postfix & Apache in Mandriva 2006 Free

Sat, 2006-06-03 09:08

I'm having an absolute blast running Linux. I’ve been `dark-platform` free since October of 2003 after reading one of Marcel Gagne's `Moving to Linux` books. The blue one to be exact. I've never regretted the decision to purchase the book at a bookstore in Santa Fe or the move to Linux.

Over time, I’ve learned quite a bit regarding the Linux operating system. `Why` it works so extremely well on servers and desktops. Here is something I've learned along the way; how to set up a Postfix and Apache server.

Ubuntu and Kubuntu Dapper Drake Arrive!

Thu, 2006-06-01 09:36

There has been a lot of excitement regarding the development of the latest release of Ubuntu, code named "Dapper Drake" (release 6.06). Having spent several months writing "Moving to Ubuntu Linux" (my new book, based on Dapper Drake), I can honestly say that the excitement is justified. This is great Linux distribution, polished, and professional. In fact, Kubuntu 6.06 is now what I am running on my notebook.

Report from Calgary Linuxfest: better late than never!

Mon, 2006-05-22 11:50

The better late than never part of the title is because Calgary Linuxfest took place a couple of weeks ago now, May 6, 2006. So . . . before this gets too old, I want to tell you about my trip to the Calgary Linuxfest. This past May 6, 2006, I had the great pleasure of appearing at the inaugural Calgary Linuxfest. Dave Watkins & CLUG (the Calgary Linux User Group) did a fantastic job of putting the event together. That bodes well for the future of this Linuxfest as an annual event.

Separation of Linux and Windows

Thu, 2006-05-18 18:29

Recently I have been looking for an alternative distro to use. You may remember how I waxed lyrical about the benefits of Libranet Linux some time ago - unfortunately Libranet's founder, Jon Danzig, died of cancer and his son Tal has placed the business on hold until Spring 2006. I really hope this distro doesn't disappear.

Desktop Linux Summit 2006 Video

Fri, 2006-04-28 19:16

Well, I've just returned from my first Desktop Linux Summit where I had a fantastic time. This event was held in San Diego, California, and on Monday of this week, I opened the show with a talk entitled "Desktop Linux : Barriers to Mass Adoption". As it turns out, the show was videotaped and is available via a RealPlayer stream, so you do need to have a copy of RealPlayer on your system.

Which Linux distribution is right for you?

Sat, 2006-03-25 09:10

For new Linux users, the hardest thing can be trying to get an answer to one simple question: "Which Linux distribution should I use?" Back in the world of that other desktop OS (ahem, Windows), the choice is pretty simple since you had no choice, or as Henry Ford might have put it, you can have "any color you want as long as it's black". In the Linux world, you can get black, yellow, red, blue, green, and every color in between. Different brands, too! Add to that the fact that everyone seems to have an opinion regarding the best Linux distribution and things get even more complicated.
