Turn off ftp?

Hello fellow Linux users,

I recently just installed Ubuntu Desktop 8.10 32bit on my IBM Thinkpad R51 1829KCF, I am multi-booting with Windows XP Pro, Vector Linux SOHO 5.9.1 32bit, Linux Mint Felicia 6.0 Main Edition 32bit & Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 32bit.

I just visited www.grc.com to run the shields up test, and it failed on port 21 which is stated is the ftp port, it states it is closed, but not stealth.

How do I go about stopping/starting the ftp stuff. It is basically a vanilla install of Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex, I haven't really added any extra software. Mainly I installed Ubuntu for when I am at internet cafe's and I want to surf/read online articles and not have to worry about malicious software getting on to my system..like a typical windows user would.

I have not installed any "ftp" software, but my machine is failing the shields up test due to port 21. I am running rsync/grsync for doing sync backups between my thinkpad and an external hard drive, does that count as ftp? Could rsync/grsync be causing my problem.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
