I own a DELL Inspiron 640m notebook computer that uses Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG to connect to a Belkin Wireless 802.11g Router using WPA Personal (TKIP) security. I have been trying out various Linux distributions with the following results:
Ubuntu 8.04 (and other distros that are derived from it) have no trouble establishing a wireless connection, and importantly, maintaining the connection for long periods of time. The same is true of other distros such as Zenwalk Live 6.0.
However, both Ubuntu 8.10 and Ubuntu 9.04 cannot maintain the connection for a significant length of time (although there is no problem establishing the connection in the first place). Once the connection has droppped out, re-establishing it is not easy and usually involves disabling wireless and then enabling wireless again or rebooting the PC. I think this is a software problem as the hardware is identical in both of the above cases.
I would really like to know the reason for the very noticeable difference in performance between Ubuntu 8.04 and the later versions with respect to maintaining a wireless connection. In particular, are there any settings that can be changed to make Ubuntu 9.04 behave more like Ubuntu 8.04 with respect to wireless connections?

Original posting, above.
I have tried ubuntu, and kubuntu 9.04 with a d-link DWA-542 N wireless adapter. Same results. Is there an updated wireless networking app. that I can download :-) to cure this problem.
I really like ku/ubuntu and don't wish to switch. But this is really getting painful
