This is almost certainly the mark of a bad CD (usually a bad burn). I would recommend sending the CD back to Addison Wesley and requesting a new one. There's an email address for that at the end of the book. If you have trouble with that, email me privately.
Alternatively, if you have a fast connection, you could download the latest Knoppix from the Knoppix Website and burning your own copy. Knoppix now offers a DVD version as well with pretty much every piece of software you could want already included.
