09/28/2006 @ 16:46 EST Hello all, I'm new to the world of Linux, I'm considering running a dual boot or multiboot setup on my desktop pc, I'm currently running Windows 2000 Professional. I've checked into a few distros of Linux. I've even downloaded a few different live cd versions. I'm down to deciding between Vector Linux, Ubuntu/Kubuntu. I would like some feedback/opinions from the community here regarding what users think of Vector, Ubuntu/Kubuntu. Also, would anyone be able to put into layman terms the differences between Ubuntu and Kubuntu? Is there a major difference or is it just the variation on the desktop KDE. Is Ubuntu better than Kubuntu? any comments would be greatly appreciated. sincerely, sknight75 |

Ubuntu Opinions
This is just one opinion, but as a fairly new Linux user, I highly recommend starting with Ubuntu (or Kubuntu depending on your preference).
I tried a few distros out when I decided to dip my toe in Linux, and was ready to throw in the towel due to not being able to wrap my head around installing programs in Linux.
Then I discovered Ubuntu (and the very necessary Automatix). As I am sure you've read countless times, Ubuntu seems to just work and is very novice friendly.
As far as whether to try Kubuntu or vanilla Ubuntu, try both Live CD's to see which desktop manager you prefer. Personally, I'm a Gnome guy, but it really is a matter of preference. You can always install Gnome or KDE on top of whichever distribution you end up choosing.
Have fun. If you get stuck, check out the forums (for whichever distro you choose).
