Which Distro ? (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Vector)

09/28/2006 @ 16:46 EST

Hello all,

I'm new to the world of Linux, I'm considering running a dual boot or multiboot setup on my desktop pc, I'm currently running Windows 2000 Professional.

I've checked into a few distros of Linux. I've even downloaded a few different live cd versions.

I'm down to deciding between Vector Linux, Ubuntu/Kubuntu.

I would like some feedback/opinions from the community here regarding what users think of Vector, Ubuntu/Kubuntu.

Also, would anyone be able to put into layman terms the differences between Ubuntu and Kubuntu? Is there a major difference or is it just the variation on the desktop KDE. Is Ubuntu better than Kubuntu?

any comments would be greatly appreciated.

sincerely,

Hi,

Welcome to Linux Land. It is a happy little place where the villagers are mostly at peace. There is some conflict over silly little matters like vi v emacs, KDE v GNOME, Kramer v Kramer, but the actual conflict is more like West Side Story than it is the Warriors.

Anyway, to your question. I will start with Vector v (K)Ubuntu. I would go with the Ubuntu distros. Vector Linux is a great distro that is built for speed. I have been using Linux since 2001. Vector Linux is based off of Slackware. Though package management and installing programs on Vector Linux is better than it was to install software on Slackware circa 2002, I think as a newbie you will find the Ubuntu community and the general Debian based (which is what Ubuntu is based off of-as is Mepis, Linspire, and many more) communities to be a little more hospitable to newbies asking honest and earnest questions.

Now Kubuntu v Ubuntu. Golly. The main difference is one uses KDE and the other uses GNOME. Both are excellent GUI's and both offer the user a lot. Anyone who tells you that one sucks and the other is great or "if you care about Linux, you will Only use..." is a bitter little man who could not get a date to the prom and wants to punish people with their superior opinions as vengeance for perceived subjugation in their haunted and lonely pasts.

If you choose KUbuntu, I would suggest Moving to Linux second edition by the owner of this site or Peter van der Linden's Guide to Linux and if you choose Ubuntu, go with Moving to Ubuntu Linux. (PS, I work for neither author. I met Marcel once at 2006 DLS and am friends with Peter-I make no commission. ;) )

Good luck, and I would like to hear which direction you went.
