Hi everyone. I enjoy the few minutes they give Mr. Gagne on CFH every so often (it should be much more, like at least a tenth of the time they give to Apple software) and I'm determined to give Linux a serious go this year. But let me get to my point about the irony. The first page I went to after installing Ubuntu was none other than this one. The only problem was that the default media player in Ubuntu, Totem, would not play your little "free software" clip (hope your cold is better). After messing around a bit I installed VLC, which, we all know, plays everything... and it did. But I wanted to get to the bottom of why the default player won't work. It wasn't until I came across EasyUbuntu in the menu and found out about the downloading of all Codecs not packaged with Ubuntu that I was able to stream your clip without downloading. The same problem arose in Suse 10.2 (I am more impressed with Suse thus far) with Kaffeine. It wasn't until I installed all Xine related items that it became clear that it was Novell's intent for me not to play that clip and, apparently, many other clips. Their Xine version has restrictions built into it due to legal issues... which of course, I fully understand. So after many Googles and failed installation attempts (of course these attempts, such as using Konsole, never fail for us newbs at the outset but much later on in the process :( ) , I have reinstalled Xine from source and now it works fine. Just thought sharing that with you would help let off a little steam. I do feel better now and am definitely going stick this out. Keep up the good work Mr. Gagne. I'll probably be buying one of your books soon. |
