Kernel Panic ????

bear with me here - first time posting and all.

I was trying to start up the software from the disk included with my shiny new book. "Moving to Linux" 2nd Edition.

When I got this pesky failure (forgive any case errors as I wrote this down in a bit of a hurry

Last three lines from the screen before the install quit.

cloop: Read Error at pos 157567913 in file /cdrom/KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX, 28372 bytes lost
cloop: Error -3 uncompressing block6533 65336/0/28372/0 157567913 -157596285
Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown -block(1,3)

I tried to install a couple of ways, one as the book suggested (press enter at the boot: prompt) and then I went into the f3 menu to see if there was anything special to try so I tried the following

boot: KNOPPIX
- same failure
boot: failsafe
- same failure

I'll bet that I have jacked something up but thought that I would check to see if anyone else has run into this.

any suggestions on what to do to resolve this would be helpful.

Thanks
