International keyboards: functions and malfunctions

Marcel,

Your current LJ article on working with accented characters is, for lack of a more appropriate word, "génial." I have used the French (France) keyboard layout for some time now and this solution works flawlessly in most cases. I am able to compose slide presentations, exams, and discussion questions (using OpenOffice.org) as well as emails (using kMail, Thunderbird, GMail) that include all the necessary accented letters.

However, there is at least one application that I use on a regular basis for which this solution does not work: Ted. Yes, there are many other more powerful word-processing apps that I could use (and often do) instead of Ted, but I really like how its simple, bland interface lets me concentrate only on my writing. Here, I am referring to my academic writing, so what follows is a purely selfish question.

Why, when I type what should be an é (e with accent grave) using the French (France) keyboard do I get this: é ? Similar things occur with ALL accented characters. If there is no fix for something like this, that's fine: I would just like to understand what's going on. Oh, by the way, the accented characters that I am trying to type DO show up in the font table when I insert them via the Insert...Symbol menu in Ted.

Thanks for your great articles. I am, as you may have guessed from the content of my question, one of those who appreciates your francophone humor.
