Cable modem Internet connection problem

Hello,

I'm really excited to be finally using Linux. So far, the 'Moving to Ubuntu' book has been really helpful.

Yet, I have hit a pretty serious snag. I cannot connect to the internet which makes it difficult to download updates, check email, etc. etc.

At the terminal, I typed 'sudo pppoeconf'. The reply I got was "Sorry, I scanned 2 interfaces, but Access Concentrator of your provider did not respond. Please check your network & modem cables. Another reason for the scan failure may also be another running pppoe process which controls the modem."

I doubt it's the cables because my worklaptop which runs vista has no problems.

I would greatly appreciate being pointed in the right direction. Thank you.
