Last Friday I ordered a Dell Inspiron 1420 Laptop with Ubuntu pre-installed. DHL brought it to me just before Noon the following Wednesday. Setup took less than a half hour. It is smaller, faster, holds four times as much data, and is $1,000 cheaper than my old Thinkpad purchased four years ago. I started experimenting with Linux in the Summer of 2005 with Fedora Core 2. Since then, I have tried various other versions of Fedora, OpenSuSE, FreeBSD, Kubuntu, and Ubuntu. Ubuntu just gets better and better and I find that the residue of tasks that I can't do on Ubuntu gets smaller and smaller with every release. A big bonus for me now is that the bash shell in ubuntu helped prepare me for a graduate project in astronomy that uses Unix system software. |
