I installed Ubuntu 8.04 about 3 weeks ago. I have been unsuccessful trying to get my WiFi to work. After countless online articles/instructions etc. etc. and 3 books I am still no closer to getting it to work. I can go online hardwired to my router but can not use WiFi. I received my latest book "Moving to Ubuntu Linux" by Marcel Gagne' last Thursday and that was no help either. Chapter 7, Page 144 "Going Wireless" explains things to do which do not exist. There is nothing like "Windows Wireless Drivers" in my System>Administration. And Ndiswrapper and Ndisgtk don't work using the Terminal. I copied the Widows Driver files bcmwl6.sys and bcmwl6.inf over to a directory etc/WINDRV in Ubuntu.
I have done nothing else in Ubuntu, because I was obsessed with getting wireless to work. Now, I'm not sure if I want to bother messing with Linux anymore. Very frustrating. Not as easy as you make it out to be.
re: Going wireless (BCM4401-B0)
Hello phillywill,
I have a couple of suggestions that might help. Unless I miss my guess, support for that wireless card should be built in to the kernel of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (that's the version that comes with the book). You really don't need the Windows driver for this one. If, for some strange reason, the driver has not automatically loaded for you, you could manually load it up. Like this. Open up a terminal window and type.
As I said, it should already be loaded. To connect to your wireless network, click System on the top menu bar, look under Administration, then click Networking. The image below should help (click it to get a full size image).
Click "Wireless connection", edit the connection, then fill in the settings specific to your wireless router (there is a drop down box that will display nearby routers). If you are using an encrypted password to access your router, enter that as well. Then, click Activate to start the connection. If you want to manually check the settings of existing network connections, you can use the same terminal window you did to load the b44 module. Again, the screenshot should help.
That's it. Good luck.
