I would like to start a forum to exchange info with others on getting Wireless NIC's running under Linux. Personally, I have to have a good reason nowadays to use wired connections when wireless just make life easier, even at the cost of a slightly slower bandwidth (when on 11g of course). However, I do find it a challenge to get Linux to: a) Recognize the wireless device To this day (I have been at it for 2 weeks now) I still cannot use any wireless device I have which includes a USR 54MB 11g wireless card on a Toshiba P4 laptop, a Dell 1350 built in to my second P4 laptop, a LinkSys USB Nework adapter in my Athlon XP and a LinkSys PCI 11g wireless card in my P3. My goal is to get at least my Toshiba Laptop and USR NIC working first. I have my two laptops configured with SUSE 9.2 while the 2 desktops are on Mandrake 10.1. SUSE 9.2 at least fires up PCMCIA services and finds the card properly but I could never get it to switch to "wlan" as the connection to the network. It keeps trying with eth0 or the onboard Ethernet port. As for Mandrake, it get's even worse as it wont even find the card. Does anyone out there have any insights or know how on this? I am sure I'm not the only one. Mike |
