I have recently purchaced your book, Moving to Linux: Kiss the Blue Screen of Death Goodbye, and am having trouble changing the screen resolution. I followed the instructions provided at http://www.marcelgagne.com/KBSODG/knoppixhelp.html#screenres and typed in "knoppix screen=1024x768" at the "boot:" prompt (without quotations). I also tried "knoppix screen=800x600", but all three (leaving the "boot:" prompt blank, typing "knoppix screen=1024x768", and typing "knoppix screen=800x600") had the exact same results of a 640x480 screen resolution. Windows (the OS) is able to run any of those resolutions on my computer. Note: I am using the Knoppix Live CD provided with the book. |

More screen res. woes
Hi Marcel.
I'm having the same problem as neko. Right now, I'm using Knoppix 5.0.1 and everything from USB mouse/keydrive and internet connection is fine - except for the screen resolution.
I remember seeing something like "Intel Graphics Controller 86865A" during boot. I hope that might give you a lead on why Knoppix won't put out 1280x1024 on my 15" Dell LCD (WindowsXP does fine at 1280x1024). I tried these cheatcodes at boot (without quotes):
"knoppix xmodule=vesa screen=1280x1024"
But that didn't help. A while ago, I also tried vga=normal along with the above. Leaving the boot prompt blank produces the same results as I have now. I'm currently at 640x480...
Also, no matter what I try, Knoppix gives me an error at boot and asks me to specify a ROWxCOL size. It says "You passed an undefined mode number" and lists about 6 options. Ex: 80x60. What does that mean? Is there really no way to get a bigger screen res with Knoppix on my comp?
I'm such a Linux n00b so thanks for being patient with my long long post.
